For Dhaka dwellers, parks offer a green escape from the hectic city life. But you know what spoils this serene experience? It’s the TRASH!

A cleaner Dhaka begins with a simple change: 1. Change your view about waste; see it as a resource, not a burden, and 2. Stop treating your environment like a giant waste bin and dispose of waste in designated spaces only.

Today, the Environment and Social Development Organization -ESDO, in collaboration with KIDC, brought young and spirited volunteers together under the Build Clean Community initiative to reflect on the causes and consequences of pollution and explore the best waste management practices, including why waste segregation is crucial at the source. Otherwise microplastics may be found in your banana peel!

From brainstorming together to taking action through a hands-on clean-up activity, participants experienced how much difference collective responsibility can make. Volunteers were divided into 4 groups, each given the task of collecting a specific subcategory to accelerate the process of reuse, recycling, and repurposing by waste workers and city authorities.

The waste categories were:

A. Single-use plastic (e.g., plastic bottle)

B. Multilayered packaging (e.g., takeaway boxes/chips packet)

C. Organics (e.g., banana peels)

D. Recyclable materials (e.g., tin/glass).

Today’s initiative is a powerful example of mobilizing the collective spirit of young people to understand the challenges facing our communities, identify solutions, and take meaningful action.
