60pc Dhaka wetland lost over last 30 yrs

News Report Over the last thirty years more than 60 percent of wetlands in Dhaka have been lost. Due to land grabbing, illegal and upland inclination drive has created massive distraction of city wetland. But, the wetland is essential for adapting of climate change impact and reduction of subsequent flooding, says a press release. Experts and environmental professionals expressed their concern in a workshop on Wednesday. They stated the need of conservation and revival of wetland and ask the young people to play vital role in creating a sustainable and eco-friendly Bangladesh. Experts say youth can be a collective force to meet the challenges of climate change adaptation; they can be a driving force behind the campaign to preserve our wetlands. Environment and Social Development Organisation-ESDO organised the workshop titled ‘Role of Youth in Climate Change Adaptation through Revival and Conservation of Wetlands’ under Youth in Action: Green Youth Citizens project in association with European Union (EU) and Stamford University Bangladesh. The workshop was held at the department of environmental science of Stamford University’s Dhaka campus. Around 40 students from Stamford University and Daffodil University participated in the workshop and shared their ideas on youth leadership and opportunities for preserving wetlands at the workshop Pro-Vice Chancellor of Stamford University Bangladesh Professor Dr. K Moudood Elahi was present at the workshop as the guest of honour. Dr. Elahi appreciated the ESDO for taking this event and expressed his concern about the loss of wetlands in Dhaka City.
