Pebble Mine is halted for Mining by EPA for Clean Water
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency delayed the open-copper mine in Alaska by evoking the Clean Water Act Rules. To protect one of the largest Salmon Bay and undisturbed water body of the world the copper mine was put on hold. The Pebble Limited Partnership, which is expected to conduct the copper mining, claimed that the copper mining will not effect the environment and the water body. However, EPA stated that scientific study indicates otherwise and there will be irreversible damages. Before several Native American Tribes were requesting EPA to stop this copper mine. The Bristol Bay is situated at the southeast of Anchorage, the largest population of wild salmon resides here, and the proposed mines is thought to include 3.2km wide and 520 meters deep ponds. Evoking the Clean water act means that the proposed mining will be reviewed by a set of engineers again and expected that the mining activity will be restricted. This is the 13th time that this act is being used.
