Rainfall in Aprils: Highest in 30 years

This April sees the highest rainfall in the month in Bangladesh since 1987. The country experienced 119 percent more rainfall than usual in the first 23 days of this month, costing standing Boro crops dearly in different areas.  Meteorologist Ruhul Kuddus of Dhaka Met office told The Daily Star yesterday that it recorded 8,904 millimetres of rainfall from April 1-23 as against an average of 4,053mm. The month's average rainfall was supposed to be 5,286mm, but even a week before it would end, the rainfall volume far exceeded the normal rainfall pattern, he said. Another Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid of the Met office told this newspaper that even if it did not rain in the remaining days of this month, the rainfall the month already experienced would exceed the month's average by 68 percent. Bazlur said the country had witnessed 76 percent more rainfall than usual in April in 1987, meaning the country experienced the highest volume of rainfall in April this year after that year. Terming the amount of rainfall this April unusual, Ruhul said the country saw heavy rainfall from April 19 till yesterday due to a western low over Bangladesh and West Bengal for the last few days. However, the influence of the low would diminish today, and the amount of rainfall would also decrease, he added. According to the Met office bulletin yesterday, rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at many places in Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions and at a few places in Mymensingh and Dhaka divisions and at one or two places in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions with heavy to very heavy rain at places across the country. The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra were advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3, while the inland river ports in Comilla, Noakhali, Patuakhali, Barisal, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar were advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 2 and other ports were asked to hoist cautionary signal number 1, Ruhul told this correspondent. Ranen Adhikary, a resident of Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj, said due to heavy rain for the last three days, paddy fields went under one to two feet water. “Due to bad weather, we cannot collect our ripe paddy… We are in a lot of trouble,” Ranen said. Farmers in many other districts which experienced heavy rainfall are concerned about the possible loss of Boro paddy as they are preparing for harvest. Besides, Boro paddy was damaged on at least two lakh hectares of land in the country's northeastern haor region due to an early flashflood that struck late March.
