World Water Day on Monday

Dhaka, 22 March, 2021: World Water Day is held annually on March 22

World Water Day is set to be observed in the country on Monday, under the theme “water and climate change.”

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the day, reports BSS.

The president in his message said water has a close connection with life and food security is largely dependent on water management. 

“There is no alternative to ensuring the availability of sufficient water in irrigation for agricultural production in Bangladesh,” he said. 

Noting that water is intrinsically connected to the climate, the president underscored the need to protect the ecological balance when using water in households, mills, factories, agriculture and other sectors. 

The president hoped that Bangladesh would be able to combat the adverse effect of climate change through sustainable water management. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her message said water and sustainable development are interconnected in riverine Bangladesh. 

Rivers, canals, haors, baors and other wetlands have been playing a vital role in daily life in the country since time immemorial, she added. 

“The Awami League government is working relentlessly to ensure safe water, protect the natural environment and reduce water pollution through implementing the Sustainable Development Goal-6,” the prime minister said, adding that the government is also working to innovate climate change resilient advanced technology and ensure its appropriate use through proper management of water resources. 

“I hope by observing World Water Day 2020, nature, water and climate related awareness will be raised among the people for the development of our country,” Sheikh Hasina said. 

She urged everyone to work together to transform the country into a “Golden Bengal,” as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, by 2041 through the implementation of environment-friendly and sustainable plans. 

World Water Day is held annually on March 22 to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. 

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993, as the first World Water Day.
