“Green Youth Citizens” Project Launched in Bangladesh


Visioning to build Environmental Leaders

Second generation of environmental leadership can make a significant change to build safe and sustainable Bangladesh. Speakers in an Inception Workshop on “Youth in Action: Green Youth Citizens” stress the above needs. They urged for a collective youth initiatives in environmental movement in Bangladesh. This project is implementing in association with European Union (EU) and five partner countries to raise awareness about environmental problems and how they confine us in the exercise of an active citizenship.

Environment and Social Development Organization- ESDO organized this workshop on November 23,  2013, at ESDO’s Head Office in Dhaka. As part of the transnational network between Europe and Asia, ESDO launched a project titled Youth in Action: “Green Youth Citizens”.  The main objective of this initiative is to engage students actively in environmental movement to build future environmental leaders. In the inception workshop, the project was formally introduced.

Former Secretary Govt. of Bangladesh and ESDO chairperson Syed Marghub Murshed formally launched the project; in his remarks he said that, “Involving the youth in environmental movement is an important task for us to make our future generation as educated, skilled and committed environmental leaders.”

ESDO’s Executive Director and Project Co-ordinator Siddika Sultana said, “Through this project we want to make changes in our community practice towards sustainable environment by involving the youth.” While addressing the presented guests she said, “ESDO is committed to build country’s socio-economic development through sustainable, environmental livelihood.”

Dr. Shahriar Hossain, ESDO’s Secretary General has announced the formal launch of Green Club in University and School level from now on. He also informed that, Green Club activities and is to involving youth will lead toward environmental movement to build future environmental leaders in Bangladesh. Guest Speaker Assistant Professor Jussi Dayna Biswas of Stamford University, expressed her gratitude and support to ESDO’s initiatives, and shared her encouragement that, it will be a good initiative because students from schools and universities will be involved in same work together on youth initiatives for building sustainable development in Bangladesh. She said, “Stamford University is looking forward to work together with ESDO.” Among other presented guests there were Md. Monzer Hossain, Senior Lecturer of Stamford University and teachers from Surovi School. 25 youths from newly formed Green Clubs at Stamford University and Surovi School participated.

ESDO involved both privileged and underprivileged group to assure the access of young people and youth leaders to good practice examples in the field of environmental protection and conservation.

Environment and Social and Development Organization (ESDO) has been working for a long time with youths through different activities, such as awareness campaigns in school, arranging children rally, art competition and engaging youths in club activities. Organization has already established Green Clubs in several schools of Dhaka, Natore, Rangpur, Munshiganj and Rajshahi.
